DECADE ISLAND GUIDEBOOK - WARDOGS

HONOR, SERVICE, SURVIVAL

The Wardog's mission is to survive, train, and ready themselves for battle at a moments notice. Wardogs will train for the Takeover. Conquering territory, and increasing numbers is every member's ultimate duty.

ORIGINS

The Wardogs were founded by the military working dogs that found themselves trapped in their kennels after the Evacuation. When everything first went down, the dogs thought their human handlers would return eventually. After a few days they realized something was wrong, and their first leader, Colonel Astoria, took action. Breaking out of his kennel, and subsequently freeing the rest of the battalion, they survived on what food and water they could find in the complex, but it only took a few weeks before it was depleted. The dogs were starving, their bodies and morale wearing thin and tired from hunger. Other dogs in the same situation might've fallen quickly to their deeply buried feral instincts, but these dogs had a bond and deeply instilled discipline that suppressed such instincts. Their training had allowed them to maintain order amongst themselves, and an established hierarchy was already in place. This would only hold for as long as the dogs' themselves would last. Colonel Astoria knew this, and thus the first Feast began, and with it the Wardogs.

CUSTOMS

THE FEAST
In order to survive, Colonel Astoria established the Wardogs' tradition of The Feast. One canine would have to be selected, and subsequently sacrificed for the survival of the pack- that much was clear. The problem Colonel Astoria faced was, who would be the Fallen Soldier, and how would he select them? As canines trained in combat, he saw no better way than having two members fight to the death. The winner lives, the loser sacrificed for the greater good. Choosing the strongest fighters in the pack, they were set to fight. The loser would be honorably executed, their body consumed to sustain the pack, forever remembered and honored as a Fallen Soldier. The victor would be exempt from the next selection. The Feast will be enacted annually, as well as whenever a famine period strikes, at the Colonel's discretion.
PURITY
The Wardogs started from a group of proud working dogs, purebreds and mixes of Malinois, Beauceron, German Shepherd, Doberman, and Laborador lines. They shared their kennels with Iudex wolves, bloodthirsty attack wolves modified to kill and maim humans and their own kind. Colonel Astoria allowed them amongst their ranks, but never fully trusted them. As such, he determined they would only ever hold the ranks of Private, Civilian, or Admonished. All members who do not look primarily like a purebred dog, working or otherwise, may only hold these ranks. For someone with unclean heritage, obtaining the rank of Private is an honor.
PUNISHMENT
Punishment may never be unfair for the crime committed. First time offenses are met with counselling, a member's superior will be placed on watch over their subordinate. Second time offenses are met with the punishment one level above the act's designated punishment. Third time offenses will demote the member to Admonished for a time period as determined by the chain of command. Disobedience is punishable with extra training and withholding of food. Moderate offenses will result in physical punishment short of scarring. Severe offenses will result in specific scarring or removal of appendages as seen fit by the chain of command for the offense committed. Death will only be used in acts of murder, multiple counts of desertion, or as the chain of command deems fit for the offense.
TERRITORY
Entry and exit of the Wardogs' base is strictly monitored by the Colonel themself. Members will be granted permission on a case by case basis. Approvable missions include recruitment, hunting, patrolling, and supply gathering. Any unauthorized entry by non-members is to be dealt with by First Platoon.
PLATOONS
First Platoon is comprised of combat specialists. Their duties include training all members in combat, hosting combat competitions other than the annual Championship, patrolling the outskirts of the base, and protecting the base. Specialists in this platoon must be adept in combat, and may be tasked with executing physical punishment, or assassinations.

Second Platoon is tasked with hunting and healing the pack. Their duties include authorized hunting outside of the base, monitoring pack health, healing wounded members, and collecting supplies. Specialists must be experts in either hunting or healing.
