DECADE ISLAND GUIDEBOOK - MODIFIEDS EXPLAINED

Below is a list of all known IC projects on DI. You may create a character from any of the following experiments, choosing some or all features in your selected project, or with any of the listed modifications. It is highly encouraged to create a modified character with/from of the following projects or listed modifications, as it contributes to the IC environment and they are all pre-approved modifications for character creation. You are much more likely to be approved with one of these than with a custom created modified. You may choose more than one project, but this is discouraged and will make approval much more difficult unless your character is very well balanced. Keep this in mind when selecting more than one. More projects may be added as time goes on, and you are encouraged to submit suggestions!

WARDOG SERUM

100% Domestic Dogs, decendants of Wardog Serum dogs only.

The Wardog Serum was created to enhance military dog's physical capabilities and increase their resiliency in the face of injury and battle. The serum, having gone through many trials and failures, made it to a near perfect stage. Surviving animals exhibit a combination of symptoms of increased size up to 30% of peers of the same breed, increased strength, increased stamina, resistance to pain/temperature, marked aggression to the point of near rabid symptoms, myostatin deficiency, insomnia, hyper metabolism, marked shortened lifespan, mental instability.

SEEKERS

Domestic cat only

Seekers are one of the oldest projects in DI, and were designed for use in reconaissance and stealth missions. The Seekers project was a combination of genetic modification and biomedical injection. These cats were injected with a modified Toxoplasmosis, altering their brains to be more receptive and obedient to human commands. They were selectively bred for larger size, incredible speed and agility, better night vision, stronger senses, and to grow elongated claws and fangs. Perfect modern day Seekers can reach to sizes close to that of a medium sized dog, with longer and sturdier claws and fangs that tend to peek out from their mouths. More often, Seekers tend to have either polydactalism, overbites and mishapen jaws, aggression, and deformed claws, though usually only show one of these deformities. Sundowners syndrome is incredibly common and expected with aging.

PLAGUE HOUNDS

Domestic dogs, domestic cats, descendants only.

Plague hounds were originally natural dogs, modified to carry dangerous pathogens for biowarfare. These animals were genetically engineered with three traits in mind; strong immune system to prevent systemic infection of carried disease, infectious sebaceous and salivary glands, and modified coats ranging from extremely short to hairless. Initially, hairless and short coated bully breeds were chosen for the earliest versions of the Plague Hounds Project. As genetic engineering improved, breeds were chosen across the spectrum, and scientists even experimented on domestic cats, notably the Sphynx breed.

Plague Hounds, which the felines were also called, were designed to carry dangerous disease such as smallpox, anthrax, and weaponized flu, as well as non pathogen toxins. These animals oozed infected body fluids from their pores, and their mouths. Salivary glands were altered to produce these bacteria, so when biting the victim would not only have exposure to whatever was in the animals mouth at the time, but the toxin or disease the specific modified was designed to carry. The sebaceous glands would infuse their natural skin's oils with toxins or pathogens, so if a human touched these animals they would become infected. Plague hounds often have skin infections, and almost all present with oozing, swollen bumps scattered on their bodies, and uncontrollable drooling of infected saliva. If they suffer an injury and come into contact with infected fluids, they are at medium risk of contracting the disease or being effected by the toxin they carry. Plague hounds that are not hairless are likely to have large patches without fur and/or balding. Due to the genetic engineering aspect of this modification, progeny are extremely likely to have Plague Hound traits.

IUDEX WOLVES

100% wolves only, north american subspecies only.

Canus Lupus Iudexus, commonly referred to as Iudex wolves, are biomedicals weaponized for war. These wolves were born natural, but given a combination of a weaponized form of a mutated rabies virus, and subjected to forced cannibalism and torture. This project was specifically designed for a kamikaze style of animal weaponry, these animals would be crazed with rage and set loose on the enemy- to be terminated upon the removal of opposing forces if they were not able to be recovered. Those that were recovered at the end of testing or a mission, would be placed in small dark isolated pens, chained by the neck and hind legs, and fed the remains of terminated wolves- to continue the spread of the weaponized virus should their immune systems over come it. In the end, the Iudex wolves would be terminated at some point- for surviving Iudex wolves would be pitted against each other in combat to improve physical conditioning and be fed without using government resources. In training, these wolves were not only fed their fallen brethren, but also live humans, generally prisoners on death row imported from surrounding state prisons. This was done to familiarize the Iudex to the taste of humans, and condition them to attack humans over other creatures.

The Iudex project was never perfected or completed at the time of the Evacuation. This left many Iudex wolves to attack whatever humans they came across, while generally leaving unfamiliar animals alone. Due to the lack of progress on the project, many Iudex suffer from physical and psychological side effects. Most have symptoms of PTSD, aggression issues, and socialization issues from being kept away from other animals including other Iudex when not training. Physical symptoms include scars from combat, embedded chains, and side effects from the virus. The virus itself caused marked aggression, hydrophobia, a marked whitening of the irises, daylight sensitivity, psychosis, high fever and death as a result, sporadic episodes of confusion and aggression, heightened pain tolerance, and bouts of extreme strength. In some cases, a paralytic set of symptoms could occur. All Iudex wolves have docked tails and white irises. Iudex disease can be spread through ingestion of infected individuals, but the virus will not be present in animals other than pure wolves. The Iudex virus will not be passed on to progeny, but resulting pschosis and mental conditions are likely to be inherited. Iudex lifespans are not known at this time, but many have succumbed to their illness and injury within a few years of their subspecies' usual lifespans.

FELIS DOMINUS

Another Resurrected project has been spotted on the island. Felis Dominus are modern variations of saber DNA. Currently spotted are lion/smilodon, tiger/smilodon, and mountain lion/smildon hybrids. Presentation of smilodon DNA is noted in larger size of hybrids, elongated fangs, shorter tails, significantly shorter coats, and slightly sloped backs. However, their modern DNA is present in markings and the majority of their anatomy. How long these Resurrected live in the wild is unknown. Felis dominus are predicted to have hip issues, cold sensitivity, live in solitude with high territorial aggression, and infertility.

CAVE BEARS

Cave bears are rumored to inhabit DI. They are a direct result of experimentation, genetic modifications from the ancient species. They are absolutely massive ranging from 6-10' at the shoulders. Both genders are seen with reddish manes along the neck and back, remarkably long fangs not unlike saber-toothed cats, and longer tails than their modern cousin. Cave bears live short lives, 2-5 yrs, and own large sections of territory per solitary bear. This creates massive conflict with other predators and bears.

OTHER MODIFICATIONS

ENHANCED
These animals have endured often excruciating procedures where body parts and limbs have been taken away or completely maimed in order to insert enhancements into the bodies. Some examples of known experiments have completely mechanical/metal/carbon fibre bones. There are some animals with heightened senses due to implanted neuro-enhancing sensors. Many enhanced modifieds were trained and constantly sent to fight other experiments to prove their combat ability after procedures. Many have marked aggression issues and mental instability, including hallucinations, PTSD, and dissociation as side effects of trauma from painful surgeries. Some are finding their enhancements are failing or causing extreme pain due to lack of maintenance since the Evacuation.
HYBRIDS
Hybrid modified endured the least amount of pain, at least in early stages. Many of these creatures are wolf-dogs, breed for size and combat promise. Researchers looked to combine the obedience and train ability of domestic breeds with size and ferocity of wolves. Findings proved too much variation in temperament, and many of these modified were used as combat practice for enhanced animals, or food for other experiments. Experiments ranged from breeding, to in vitro DNA modification. These experiments are the most elusive, though what has been seen have resembled canine-feline crosses. These were likely precursors to future resurrection protects.

Due to the nature of genetic experimentation, many Hybrids end up with hereditary disorders and cancers. Carnivore-herbivore crosses tend to have digestive and appetite issues. The mental states of hybrids are unknown, but more extreme combinations seem to be the most erratic.

Hybrids must make sense, reptile-mammal hybrids for example will be incredibly difficult to be approved unless a lot of justification can be made on it's physiology. Hybrids of canine-feline, or bigcat-domestic cat are very common and encouraged.

BIOMEDICAL
Biomedicals are the most mysterious among the modified. These animals have been subjected to medical testing, organic enhancement, and genetic experimentation. Those who have been subjected to medical testing face unknown side effects to experimental medicines and treatments. Organic enhancement procedures can have subjects waking with missing, re-arranged, or extra limbs or organs- they don't tend to live very long. However, with incredible abilities and extraordinary appearances comes unknown and dangerous side effects. Many of these animals, particularly genetic experiments suffer from ailments like cancer, birth defects, and hereditary disease. Of course, side effects can be expected with biomedicals who have undergone medical testing. Lifespans and conditions are incredibly erratic and unstable for biomedicals.

Biomedicals have the most creative freedom. What was listed above were only examples. As long as your character isn't overpowered it will not be hard to get a biomedical approved- try to keep some realism though as with all modified.
