DECADE ISLAND GUIDEBOOK - HISTORY

ORIGINS

Decade Island is an uninhabited, small island near the San Juan islands. In the 1960's, at the start of the Vietnam War, the US government established an Army research facility with the sole purpose of conducting biological research. Experiments started out innocently enough, treatments for war dogs against the commonly used weapons at the time. Overtime the scientists became more and more confident, and with lack of true regulation and government oversight, experiments became much more in depth..and dangerous.

It started with body modification, then genetic experiments, and as time progressed- resurrections and splicing of new and old creatures. The scientists were proud of their accomplishments, when they came out right that was. The mistakes, the left overs? Well, they were put to use. After all, the small island facility only had so much room.. These leftovers were often used as food, or combat targets for other experiments. Either way, none of them made it out alive. Not alone, and certainly not before the Evacuation.

THE EVACUATION

The problem with the scientists was that they were so blinded by progress and scientific curiosity, they never took a moment to consider the ethics of their work. Could animals feel pain, and did they have emotions, souls? Did they understand suffering, or were they simply biological machines, metabolizing, breathing, existing until their systems shut down? The census voted on the latter, most likely to cope with the intensity and gore of their experiments. Who could truly believe a dog or cat knew suffering, and hurt and rip out their bones with little anesthesia in the same motion? This made many of the scientist leave their compassion and empathy at the door, far before arriving to the island.

Not everyone who worked at the facility was soulless, however. As time went on experiments became more complex, and as more animals suffered, a small group of scientist banded together. They plotted to set the animals free, and leave the island as their paradise. No human, in their mind, would ever taint the island's beauty again, and these poor creatures who suffered would live long and uninterrupted lives. To accomplish this, however, they had to sabotage the facility in a manner that would make it unsafe for human life. Their original plan was to fake an outbreak of a modified plague pathogen, but this would prove unnecessary. What these scientist unleashed was far more dangerous.

Among the deepest depths of the facility, kept in the lowest levels, was the Resurrection Project. This genetic research was kept so secret that the majority of the facilities staff, those not directly involved in the project, had no idea what went on below them. Gruesome beasts of spliced ancient and modern DNA were created here. Fearsome and brutal, these animals were creatures of Ice Age nightmares. When the scientist shut down the electric containment system for all the pens and cages, they released these ancient brutes- but perhaps even more terrifying were their tortured subjects, those they considered simple and unfeeling.

Oh, they felt alright. Anger, indignant, enraged, pain, suffering.

Those humans who escaped the claws and jaws of the Resurrected quickly found themselves at the mercy of those animals they tortured. Anyone who made it out alive fled the island, and a governmental order condemned the island as unsafe, and to ensure their work was never discovered, all records of Decade Island's existence were wiped- the island would never be found on a map, and any poor sod who happened to beach upon it would likely die before they were able to speak of their discovery.

NEW RULERS

Human free, the animals who suffered in the facility spread across the island. Months passed, many animals clashed and as natural processes kicked in- canines and domestic felines became the most common species on the island. The Resurrected were never found after the Evacuation, though their legend is passed through the elder generations of Modified. They became more tales to frighten the young with than actual beasts of flesh and blood. The natural ecosystem was thrown into wack, many native prey species suffer and every day food sources seem to dwindle.

Decade Island's new history is beginning to write itself as these tortured beings settle into their skin...Some are seeing the light of day, feeling the water against their paws, experiencing the smells and sounds of the forest for the first time in their lives. Some animals are finding peace, but some groups are beginning to feel the temptation of the wilds. Small territories are being claimed, but with resources becoming scarce, the threat of war looms over the cloudy horizon.
